PDP Crisis: Wike’s Camp Moves to Reorganise State Chapters, Prepare for Fresh Congresses, Convention

The Nyesom Wike–aligned faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has unveiled a sweeping internal restructuring plan aimed at revamping troubled state chapters and laying the foundation for fresh congresses and a national convention.

Chairman of the factional Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, made this known during the opening session of the board’s meeting held on Monday at the Life Camp official residence of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Ohuabunwa said the faction is committed to rebuilding the party from within and restoring public confidence in its internal processes. He revealed that meaningful progress is already being made in reorganising distressed state chapters through the constitution of credible caretaker committees. According to him, these efforts are meant to “prepare the ground for transparent congresses and subsequent convention processes.”

He stressed that the reforms were necessary to “build trust, strengthen internal structures, and ensure that our party remains a model of fairness and inclusiveness in the Nigerian democratic space.”

Reaffirming full support for the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee (NWC), Ohuabunwa said:
“We are going to work with this NWC, we are going to encourage and support them to ensure that the right things are done in line with the law and the guidelines of our great party.”

He underscored the need for the BoT to reclaim its constitutional role as the stabilising arm of the party.
“As our constitution stipulates, the Board of Trustees must continue to provide stability, wisdom, and moral guidance,” he said.

The BoT, he noted, has a responsibility to “safeguard the soul of the party, steer it away from divisive tendencies, and reinforce the values that have historically set the PDP apart as a disciplined, democratic institution.”

Ohuabunwa urged members to prioritise unity as they push through the restructuring agenda, saying:
“In this defining moment, we must rise above sentiments and act with unity of purpose.”

He reaffirmed the faction’s resolve to ensure that the PDP emerges stronger and more cohesive after the ongoing reforms.
“Our duty is clear — to consolidate the reforms underway, deepen internal cohesion, and ensure that the Peoples Democratic Party becomes more virile, more united, and fully prepared for the leadership responsibilities ahead.”

Describing the BoT as the “conscience of the party” and its “moral compass,” he emphasised the importance of upholding legality and due process.
“We must ensure that this party stands to be counted in its obedience to the laws of the Federation, the laws of our party, and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” he said.

Ohuabunwa also thanked members who attended the meeting despite short notice and travel challenges, expressing optimism that their deliberations would set the tone for a more stable and revitalised PDP.

Those in attendance included the factional National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; and former deputy governors such as Dr. Philip Salawu of Kogi State, among several other party chieftains.
