In a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, the President revealed that he forwarded General Musa’s name to the Senate just two days earlier for screening and approval. He described the former Chief of Defence Staff as “a fine gentleman,” stressing that his appointment comes at a crucial period for the nation.
“I want to commend the Nigerian Senate for its expedited confirmation of General Musa yesterday. His appointment comes at a critical juncture in our lives as a nation,” Tinubu wrote. “God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
General Musa, who recently served as the Chief of Defence Staff, attracted widespread public attention during his confirmation hearing after the Senate declined to grant him its traditional “bow and go” privilege.
Instead, lawmakers subjected him to an in-depth screening, questioning him extensively on defence financing, intelligence lapses, technological deficiencies, rising banditry, terrorist infiltration, recent military setbacks, and the nationwide increase in kidnappings.
His screening came at a time when the Senate is renewing efforts to classify kidnapping as a terrorist act and introduce the death penalty without the option of a fine part of a broader move to strengthen Nigeria’s legal and security framework ahead of Musa’s full assumption of office.
